Talking bones

June 11, 2020 by Vicki Aldridge

So I’d like to talk to you about bones, and how they can ‘talk’ to you. They have a role in giving us physical feedback and giving us a sense of physical presence, in other words another form of proprioception!

Our skeleton isn’t just for holding our soft tissues upright. It also lets us know where we are if you let it.  It's one of the theories why amputees prefer ‘stubbies’ rather than a full mobile cup fitting prosthetic. The theory is it gives a more positive sense of postural feedback, and therefore balance.

Modern shoes are good for protecting our feet from debris on the ground but they can also limit our bony contact and connection with the ground.

So my challenge for you is daily find your feet by gently tapping your heels on the ground. Start by standing well (Here’s the YouTube link in case you need a reminder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unkQ9b4GGSo) and tap each heel in turn on the ground until you feel a gentle wave of vibration/ feeling up through your body. Ideally going right up to your ears! Start gently and build up if you need to! Remember you are just looking for a feeling.

Have fun!
